In recent years the 320 x 240 resolution of the T420 has become the professional’s choice in a variety of industries and applications. Yet the recent introduction of FLIR’s UltraMax technology makes the T420 an even better value. With UltraMax the T420 can now produce fully radiometric 640 x 480 images—double the resolution and four times as many real pixels for the same price. It’s reason enough for many users to move up from the E-Series cameras.

Imaging

The thermal sensitivity of the FLIR T420 is an excellent 0.04 °C, 20% better than the E60. In practice, this amounts to seeing finer image gradients and making more accurate measurements. The T420 can image and measure surfaces from -4 to 1202 °F (-20 to 650 °C), a range wide enough for most conditions encountered. The autofocus feature allows for easy one handed operation by simply depressing the capture button halfway. Manual motorized focus is also available for complex targets where fine tuning may be needed. Giving even more flexibility in capturing the perfect image, the FLIR T420 screen will automatically change its orientation from landscape to portrait according to how the camera is oriented.

UltraMax

FLIR UltraMax image enhancement captures 16 images in under one second. Because of the natural movement of the human body, each image is slightly offset from the others, yielding a much greater amount of data about the target overall. Upon download to the included FLIR Tools software, the images can be combined into one new image. The resulting thermal image has double the original resolution, or 640 x 480 in the case of the FLIR T420. As with the originals, every pixel of the new image includes radiometric data, and can be analyzed using the spotmeters, area boxes, and other tools. UltraMax images are not only larger, but also clearer, since naturally occurring digital noise can be reduced through the comparison of the same point in multiple images.

MSX

MSX image enhancement uses data from the visible light camera included on the T420 to add edge detail to a thermal image. The result is a thermal image that looks more familiar to the human eye. Instead of being able to see only thermal differences, users can also see where objects begin and end, regardless of their thermal pattern. Most users find that MSX enables them to move about their work more quickly, since objects look more familiar and setting up the best image seems more natural. Regardless of whether the feature is activated on the camera, MSX is an available option on all captured images when viewed in FLIR Tools.

Wireless

Wireless and Bluetooth provide a multitude of ways to connect to the T420 wirelessly. A WiFi connection can be established between the camera and a device with or without a wireless network nearby. The camera is able to create its own network with a computer, phone, or tablet running FLIR software. The free FLIR Tools Mobile app lets Apple iOS or Android users view live streams, capture images or videos, and create and email reports directly from the device. Users can even remotely control focus and monitor measurements on the T420 if conditions are too dangerous or sensitive.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth connections allow the FLIR T420 camera to further document user findings. Voice annotations can be recorded with each image through the included Bluetooth headset. Or connect certain MeterLink equipped FLIR and Extech test meters and capture their data alongside the thermal image. For instance, current or power measurements from the FLIR CM85 Power Clamp Meter could be recorded at the same time as the switchgear is being imaged. Or moisture and humidity data could be captured alongside a thermal image of an area affected by water damage. Data is stored together for better reporting and more efficient use of time.

Flexibility

The FLIR T420 is compatible with six available accessory lenses, giving users the flexibility to choose the best lens for the task. Also available are more measurement options and a greater number of image annotation methods, including adding text notes to any image. All T420 images include a digital compass stamp, reflecting the direction the camera is facing, and further documenting the target area. The time lapse feature allows users to mount the camera to a tripod and record images over time at a user set interval. The flexibility of the T420 enables businesses and institutions to apply infrared to a wider variety of applications and make the most of their investment in infrared.

Warranty Information

The FLIR T420 comes with a 2 year warranty that covers parts and labor, a 5 year warranty on the battery, and a 10 year warranty on the thermal detector (the most vital part of the camera).
